As part of the agenda of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, the ambassadors representing the countries of the Central American Integration System (CAIS) visited the Saint Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums (SPbSRIVS FMBA). The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the leading Russian influenza vaccine manufacturer and to share opinions on the prospects of the project currently being implemented by the institute, a biotechnological enterprise in Nicaragua, the Instituto Mechnikov. “Undoubtedly, we support and are interested in the implementation of the MECHNIKOV project.
It is of great importance not only for Nicaragua, but also for all Latin American countries. Russian technologies and vaccines produced here meet the latest requirements. We are ready to provide the necessary support for the development of the project in the future,” said Carmen Eleonora Ortes Williams, Ambassador of Honduras and General Secretary of CAIS. Implementation of the Mechnikov project will significantly reduce the shortage of influenza vaccines in Latin America, primarily due to the emergence of its own technologies and competitive pricing in the region. The participants of the meeting highlighted the strategic importance of the project in the event of a pandemic, since today national manufacturers in the region are unable of provide all of the Latin America with vaccines. The Instituto Mechnikov facilities will allow Nicaragua not only to safeguard its own population against influenza, but also to transfer a sufficient amount of vaccine to the PAHO for distribution across the region.
